Two lanes

Classify resolves URLs in two lanes. Indexed: the URL is already in the index, and you get its classifications instantly. On-demand: the URL isn’t indexed yet, so we fetch and classify it live. On-demand is best-effort by design, and some pages can’t be classified (paywalls, thin content, no close match in the reference set). We place a hold on the on-demand credits while we work; if the page can’t be classified, the job finishes as unknown and the hold is released. You’re never charged for a URL we can’t classify. Every successfully classified URL joins the index, so it resolves in the indexed lane for everyone afterward. Semantic search over the live index, billed when your search completes. A completed search with zero results still bills; a query we can’t process (422) or an upstream failure (503) never bills. See Search for request and response shapes.
